Spotting Rules
The spotter should aim to have as little involvement in the lift as possible. It is appropriate for the spotter to help the lifter bring the weight out over their chest from the rack, and to help them rack the weight at the end of the set. Should the lifter be unable to get the weight up (either it stops moving completely, or it starts going back down), the spotter should intervene to bring the weight back up to the top, and then rack the weight immediately. Unless the lifter is intending to do negatives but only be partially involved in the concentric motion, or the lifter's movement patterns are still a work in progress and the spotter has to help the lifter move the weight evenly, the spotter should leave the weight alone, and end the set as soon as s/he has to intervene in any way. The bench press is not a team sport.
